തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് 2026 ഒക്ടോബർ 2ന് പുറത്ത് വന്ന കണക്ക് പറയുന്നത് കേരളത്തിലെ ജയിലുകളിൽ ഉള്ള 9,805 തടവുകാരിൽ 1,201 പേർ അതായത് 12.24 ശതമാനം പേർ മാനസികാരോഗ്യ സഹായം തേടി എന്നാണ്. അതിൽ 1,160 പേർ പുരുഷന്മാരാണ്. ജയിൽ വകുപ്പിന്റെ കണക്ക് പ്രകാരം ഇവർക്ക് ഗുരുതര പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ഇല്ല, ചെറിയ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾക്ക് മരുന്ന് കഴിക്കുന്നവരാണ്. ഇതിന് കാരണം ലഹരിയാണെന്നും പുറത്ത് ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഒരിക്കലും ചികിത്സ തേടാത്തവർക്ക് ജയിലിൽ ചികിത്സ കിട്ടുന്നു എന്നത് നല്ലതാണെന്നും ഡോക്ടർമാരും ജയിൽ ഡിജിപി എസ് ശ്രീജിത്തും പറയുന്നു.
പരോളിൽ വന്ന ഭർത്താവിനെ കണ്ട് ഞെട്ടിയ കുടുംബം
സുരേഷ് എന്ന് പേര് മാറ്റി വിളിക്കുന്ന ഒരാളുടെ കഥയുണ്ട്. പരോളിൽ വീട്ടിൽ വരുന്നതിനെ കുടുംബം പോലും പേടിച്ചിരുന്നു. കാൽപ്പാട് കേട്ടാൽ പോലും വിറച്ചിരുന്ന ഭാര്യയും മക്കളും. വാതിൽ വലിച്ചടിക്കും, ചീത്ത വിളിക്കും. മദ്യത്തിന് അടിമയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഇത്തവണ പരോളിൽ വന്ന സുരേഷ് ആകെ മാറിയിരുന്നു. വാതിൽ അടിക്കൽ ഇല്ല, ചീത്ത വിളി ഇല്ല. ജയിലിൽ കിട്ടിയ മാനസികാരോഗ്യ ചികിത്സയാണ് അയാളെ മാറ്റിയത്. സുരേഷ് ഒരാൾ മാത്രമല്ല, ഇങ്ങനെ മാറിയ നിരവധി പേരുണ്ട്.

എന്താണ് ഇത്രയധികം പേർക്ക് മാനസിക പ്രശ്നം വരാൻ കാരണം എന്ന് കൺസൾട്ടന്റ് മനോരോഗ വിദഗ്ധൻ ഡോക്ടർ അരുൺ വി പറയുന്നു. ലഹരിയാണ് പ്രധാന വില്ലൻ. ജയിലിൽ കിടന്ന് പ്രശ്നം വന്നവരും ഉണ്ട്, പക്ഷേ ഭൂരിപക്ഷവും നേരത്തെ തന്നെ വിഷാദം, ഉത്കണ്ഠ പോലുള്ള പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ഉള്ളവരാണ്. അത് മദ്യം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ലഹരി ഉപയോഗം കൊണ്ട് കൂടുതൽ വഷളായി. പഴയ ഒരു പഠനത്തിൽ മാനസികാരോഗ്യ സഹായം തേടിയ 401 തടവുകാരിൽ 390 പേർക്കും ലഹരി ബന്ധമുള്ള പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
പുറത്ത് കിട്ടാത്ത ചികിത്സ അകത്ത് കിട്ടുമ്പോൾ
ഇതാണ് ഡോക്ടർമാർ പറയുന്ന നല്ല കാര്യം. പുറത്ത് ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഒരിക്കലും മാനസികാരോഗ്യ കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ പോകാത്തവരാണ് പലരും. നാണക്കേട് കരുതി പോകില്ല, പണം ഇല്ലാതെ പോകില്ല. എന്നാൽ ജയിലിൽ എത്തുമ്പോൾ എല്ലാവരെയും ആരോഗ്യ പരിശോധന നടത്തും. എന്ത് മരുന്ന് കഴിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് എന്ന് ചോദിക്കും. പെട്ടെന്ന് എന്തെങ്കിലും ഗുരുതര പ്രശ്നം വന്നാൽ ഉടൻ ജനറൽ ആശുപത്രിയിലേക്കോ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിലേക്കോ കൊണ്ടുപോകും. അങ്ങനെ ചികിത്സ കിട്ടുന്നു.
